Joe Darrow (Kevin Costner) is a doctor who has recently been a widower and believes his late wife, Emily (Susana Thompson) is trying to talk to him about the dead, using patients on the verge of death. In addition, Joe happens to be pursued by strange and mysterious dragonflies, which make him remember more and more of the deceased wife.
